Is Set to Change Mobile Photography — Launching April 21

The Oppo Find X9 Ultra telephoto system is shaping up to be one of the most technically ambitious camera setups ever packed into a smartphone. Set to launch globally on April 21, this flagship brings a dual-approach zoom strategy that covers both everyday shooters and professional photographers — all from the same device.

Here’s what we know so far.

A True 10x Optical Zoom, Built Right In

Most flagship phones today top out at 5x optical zoom. Oppo is doubling that.

The Find X9 Ultra features a new Hasselblad-branded 50MP 10x optical telephoto lens built around a custom JNL Ultra-Sensing Sensor with an f/3.5 aperture, delivering a 230mm equivalent focal length. That’s DSLR territory inside a phone.

To fit this kind of reach without bloating the chassis, Oppo uses a five-reflection prism that shrinks the camera module’s length from 41mm down to just 29mm — a 30% reduction compared to conventional periscope designs.

The result? Optical-quality 20x shots at a 460mm equivalent, using in-sensor crop on top of the native 10x optics – with far less quality loss than standard digital zoom.

The Engineering Behind the Lens

Getting 10x optical zoom right isn’t just about focal length. Oppo has stacked several innovations to make the output genuinely sharp.

Because each light reflection inside a prism can degrade image quality, Oppo implemented a three-piece prism design separated by a nanometer-scale diaphragm and an “air capsule” — reportedly cutting stray light by 99.999%.

Stabilisation was also rethought from the ground up. Traditional prism-based OIS isn’t compatible with a five-reflection system, so Oppo shifted stabilisation directly to the sensor itself enabling steady shots at high magnification — a critical advantage for sports, wildlife, or distant portraits.

During manufacturing, each unit undergoes a Triple Active Optical Alignment (AOA) process that calibrates the lens, sensor, and prism with micron-level precision for consistent sharpness across every device.

The Optional Hasselblad External Telephoto Kit

For users who want to go further, Oppo is also preparing a dedicated external telephoto accessory — and it’s not your average clip-on lens.

According to Oppo Find Series product manager Zhuo Shijie, the external module features 16 precision glass elements that improve light intake and overall image clarity, and matches the finish and durability standards of Hasselblad lenses.

When paired with the phone’s internal mid-range zoom camera, this external kit is designed to unlock a level of optical performance that goes well beyond what any built-in lens can offer alone — bridging the gap between mobile photography and professional camera systems.

Two Zoom Experiences, One Device

Oppo’s strategy here is intentional: CEO Pete Lau has stated that external telephoto converters existed only because building a quality 10x zoom into the phone itself was so difficult. With the Find X9 Ultra, Oppo claims to have solved that problem — making the built-in 10x the default go-to, and the external kit an upgrade for those who demand even more.

This dual system means casual users get a powerful built-in zoom that handles weddings, concerts, and travel photography without any accessories. Enthusiasts and creators can attach the Hasselblad module and push optical performance into professional-grade territory.

Bottom Line

The Oppo Find X9 Ultra’s telephoto setup isn’t just an incremental upgrade — it’s a genuine leap in mobile zoom photography. Between the five-reflection prism engineering, Hasselblad colour tuning, sensor-shift stabilisation, and the optional external lens kit, this phone is making a strong case for being the zoom camera champion of 2026.
