Sony FX5 Release Date Pushed to 16 November: What Indian Filmmakers Need to Know
The Sony FX5 release date has moved again. Sony’s European online stores now list 16 November as the first shipping date for its new compact cinema camera, a month later than the mid-October date they showed earlier. Sony announced the FX5 on 22 July with an original release date of 21 August, and buyers have been waiting ever since. For Indian video shooters who have been holding back on an FX3 or FX6 purchase, here is where things stand.

What’s new in the Sony FX5
The FX5 sits between the FX3 and the FX6 in Sony’s Cinema Line. It uses a 16.6MP full-frame stacked Exmor RS sensor with the BIONZ XR2 processor. The headline feature is open gate recording: it uses the full 3:2 sensor area at up to 5K 60p. It also records 4K at up to 120p, and Sony has promised 5K 120p and 4K 240p through a future firmware update.
Internal 16-bit RAW is supported through X-OCN LT and other codec options, so you no longer need an external recorder. Sony claims more than 15 stops of dynamic range, with three base ISOs of 800, 4000 and 12800. You also get a 3.5-inch fully articulating touchscreen, AI-based autofocus with human pose estimation, a wired LAN port and the NP-SA100 battery. There is no built-in viewfinder; the DVF-EL1 OLED viewfinder is an optional extra.

Why the Sony FX5 keeps slipping
Sony has only said the delay is due to “production” reasons. Its Japanese notice from 18 September targeted “late October or later”, and the FX5 accessories (the DVF-EL1 viewfinder, XLR-H2 handle and VMC-BNCU1 timecode cable) are also delayed. PetaPixel has reported user claims of a rear LCD that can shift out of place on early units. That link is unconfirmed, and Sony has not commented on it.

Sony FX5 India price and availability
Sony India has not announced an official price or launch date, so both remain TBC. In the US, the FX5 costs $4,898 for the body and $5,498 with the XLR handle. Price tracker Smartprix shows an expected India price of about ₹4,70,000 for the body, but this is an estimate, not an official figure. Indian retailers such as Foto Centre India list the camera as “coming soon” and on backorder. If the European date holds, India stock is likely to arrive after mid-November at the earliest.
A photographer’s take: should you wait?
On fashion and advertising sets in Delhi NCR, more clients now ask for stills and motion from the same shoot. A camera like the FX5 makes sense for that kind of hybrid work. Open gate lets you shoot once and crop for a 16:9 film, a 9:16 reel and a 4:5 feed post without reframing on set. Internal RAW also means a smaller rig, which matters in tight studios and on location.
That said, do not plan a paid commercial job around a camera you cannot buy yet. If you have a shoot booked in the next six weeks, rent or use the FX3 or FX6 you know well. Wait for the first India units and early reviews, and make sure the LCD reports are cleared up before you spend nearly five lakh rupees.
Conclusion
The Sony FX5 looks like a strong all-rounder for India’s growing branded-content market, but its release date is still moving. For now, 16 November in Europe is the best guide, and India pricing is TBC. We will update this post when Sony India confirms the launch.
