Breaking the norms has always resulted in bringing the revolution and when it comes to basics of photography the universal rule goes the same. If you are bored of following those very basics of photography and wish to bring the fresh air in your studio, then start observing those unique photographs that makes the products look larger than life and makes you turn again and again to those catalogue or billboards. They are actually results of breaking the norms, where the photographer plays beyond the widest aperture and out-of-focus background. Here I go with some quick tips from my experience that can be of good help to bring some fresh air in your work.
Break the angle
Go beyond the eye-level photography and create some unique angle shots. But one has to be careful that the shot does not overpower the product/subject or even distort it. If the theme is to distort the subject then this is the best area for you to explore. You may even wish to hang the subject normally and shoot from underneath or above.
Go close
This goes best for catalog or pamphlet where you need to concentrate on detailing. Go for macro shot when the need is to concentrate on detailing. Though, these days, macro shot photography is trending, but one needs to understand the importance of it and then only apply it, when and where needed. Take extra care of perfect lighting to highlight the key feature of subject/product.
Weird Use
Go beyond the normal thinking process. The best way to bring attention to a photograph is to add an element of uniqueness to it. For instance, in a recent beauty shoot, I used fresh fruits to describe about natural colors and make up was applied keeping those fruits in mind. This kind of imagination and implementation of it in a logical way can definitely draw attention to your work. Be careful about creativity and logic, as both should go hand-in-hand.
Background
Plain background is good, but if you want to add wao factor to it, you need to travel that extra mile and bring the perfect background to sync it with the subject/product. Staging a unique background and props with the main subject in the foreground can add interest and even improve how desirable a product is.
Background focus
Off-focus background is good when you need to keep the focus on main subject. But what when you want the entire image to speak and bring attention of viewers? Yes, I am talking about the focused background, which becomes very much part of the subject. By this I mean that you need to keep the product slightly in front but keep the background clear as it can help to promote the idea. One can also try switching it up at times and place the product even in the background.
Surface matters
At recent Lakme Fashion Week, designer Namrata Joshipura used the reflecting surface as a strong element to talk about her clothes. It reminds me of the uniqueness that a surface can add to your photography and bring accolades. Go beyond mirror and add depth through water or paint. Use appropriate lighting to enhance the reflection and see the magic.
Manipulate it
Learn it and honk it again and again. Yes, I am talking about learning the photo editing software. Even after perfect photography, you need a bit of polishing and it comes only on editing table.
